Vision paired with strong strategic execution makes an effective weapon against the epidemic of quiet quitting and quiet cracking.
Move over, quiet quitting. There’s a new headline in workplace trends. Almost half of workers are at breaking point, and it’s costing companies $438 billion in productivity loss. As a professional in strategic execution, I’ve led hundreds of transformations for Canadian-based teams who want to shift away from traditional, rigid work structures to more flexible and employee-centric approaches.
Often, these transformations are initiatives built around optimizing performance and workplace satisfaction, leading to better yields and higher profits. We build bridges between strategy and results–with many strategies tailored to prevent the silent disengagement and resentment that precedes trends like quiet quitting or quiet cracking–a term describing the people who stay, struggle and silently crack under the pressures of financial dependency, hostility, and workplace warfare.
Quiet Quitting and Quiet Cracking
Sanitized terms like quiet quitting and quiet cracking describe what’s ultimately a leadership crisis. People are withdrawing energy from toxic, outdated leadership models–and if these patterns aren’t quickly reversed, the costs in terms of finance, reputation, and culture can be nothing short of catastrophic.
Gallup’s 2023 State of the Global Workplace Report found only 23% of employees worldwide said they were engaged at work—meaning over three-quarters are emotionally or cognitively checked out. In North America, up to 59% of employees admit to quiet quitting (CNBC/ResumeBuilder, 2023), signalling this phenomenon is not a fringe issue. Companies are staring down a mainstream collapse of morale. So, what’s the solution?
Leadership. As someone who offers leadership training, as well as Execution Strategy, the biggest culprits leading to workplace burnout remain outdated management and operating systems. People don’t respond to compliance, control, and extraction—everyone, including employees, requires creativity, connection, and consciousness to thrive. People want to contribute to something meaningful.
The World Economic Forum reports that burnout costs the global economy over $322 billion annually. Yet corporations continue to throw perks and productivity apps at employees instead of addressing root cause problems–in this case, the failure to lead consciously and thoughtfully.
Quiet quitting and quiet cracking aren’t some mysterious, generational phenomenon; it’s the outcome of systems and cultures that have left people feeling frustrated and burnt out. For example:
- Lack of psychological safety: 43% of employees say they don’t feel safe speaking up in their workplace (McKinsey, 2022).
- Transactional work cultures: Organizations reward output, not purpose. People are burned out and bored.
- Performative DEI and well-being: Initiatives lack depth, consistency, or genuine energetic presence from leadership.
Companies can’t ask people to show up as machines and then be surprised when they shut down. For leaders seeking genuine solutions, it’s necessary to switch mental gears. No one needs more engagement surveys.
The Principles Guiding Quantum Leadership
As the next generation of leaders, quantum leaders learn to embrace complexity, uncertainty, and interconnectedness to guide organizations through change and foster innovation. Principles guiding quantum leaders include:
- Presence Over Performance
Quantum leaders practice intentional presence—not performative visibility. They model consciousness, not command. Employees feel the difference, and it alters the culture.
Neuroscience confirms: Mirror neurons in our brains pick up the emotional states of those around us (Rizzolatti & Craighero, 2004). Leadership presence is biologically contagious.
- Resonance Over Role
Quantum leaders don’t extract performance; they create spaces of trust, coherence, and collective meaning, giving people the ability, tools, and freedom to excel within their roles.
According to HeartMath Institute research, coherent leadership fields increase collaboration and reduce cortisol levels across teams (McCraty, 2017).
- Collaboration Over Command
Leadership isn’t linear. Exceptional leaders see organizations as interdependent systems, where collaboration—not control—is the metric of success. Purpose is the result of dialogue and shared vision.
Employees whose values are aligned with their organizations are 3x more likely to stay and 5x more likely to feel fulfilled, according to Harvard Business Review (2022).
- Conscious Capitalism
Accomplished leaders create spaces where people feel they can flourish–purpose is built into company DNA; workers feel supported in pursuing the best outcomes and actions to meet goals.
Profits are 23% higher in organizations that support meaningful work (MIT Sloan Management Review, 2023).
Leaders who ignore the call for transformation risk becoming irrelevant. Evolve or die, as the saying goes.
Organizations today have new requirements for leaders. Quiet quitting and cracking are signs that your internal systems are in a state of decay, and team members are expressing pain. The solution is transformation through leadership. Leaders must learn to embrace a style that inspires employees to embrace change and work towards a shared vision.
Transitioning from Quiet Defeat to Employee Empowerment
With the right vision and a team skilled in strategic execution, leaders can initiate and guide the transformation process, starting with a clear purpose that supports a culture of communication and collaboration. Remember:
Quantum Leaders don’t fight disengagement—they learn from it.
They don’t demand loyalty—they offer meaning.
They don’t silence rebellion—they listen to what people are saying.
Tends like quiet quitting and quiet cracking can’t be solved by catchy slogans or motivational posters. Hanging in there was never an option. Instead, leaders need to embrace a deeper understanding of issues that lead to disengagement and burnout–as well as those that will inspire and ignite team members: purpose, autonomy, and mastery.
True Leadership begins with a strategy and vision built around goals and purpose, with strategic execution providing the skillset and tools to connect the dots and create a better, more productive environment for everyone working within an organization, including the leaders.
